Zalo Reyes Obituary: Zalo Reyes, a famous singer, passed away at the age of 69 as a result of complications from diabetes, a disease that he had been suffering from since 2008. The singer’s family shared on the singer’s Instagram account that they could confirm the news. Zalo Reyes, one of the most iconic figures associated with the popular music scene of the 1980s, was not always known by his stage name. On November 3, 1952, Boris Leonard Gonzalez Reyes was born in Santiago. His full name is Boris Leonard Gonzalez Reyes. In the strictest sense, he was born and raised in the Conchal commune, and it was this fact that gave him the nickname by which he would be known in the years to come. He was the youngest of four brothers and came from a family that was considered to be of the popular stratum. His father was a taxi driver. He firmly believes that he will never be defeated and makes this fact abundantly clear at all times. Reyes was one of the first really popular idols of Chilean music, and he capitalized on the boom in TV to further amplify his figure. He was also one of the first musicians in Chile to use autotune. In 1967, he won a Mothers Center Festival with the first weapon he ever created, which he had crafted in Conchal.   Full Obituary

Gonzalo “Zalo” Pedroso Obituary: Pedroso is remembered for his showmanship, his ready smile and his extensive career in footwear. Better known as “Zalo,” he began as a buyer for Burdines (now Macy’s) and Bloomingdale’s, and went on to design his own collections. “He was one of the shoe business’s great geniuses,” said Steve Madden, who met and developed a rapport with Pedroso in the 1980s. Footwear consultant Denny Cohen agreed: “Zalo was such a talent, but most importantly, [he was] a great friend for so many years.” Cohen, who worked with Pedroso at both Burdines and Bloomingdale’s, noted he was a fun-loving character who always signed off on letters and emails with “a la playa,” or “at the beach.” Pedroso also left an impression on executives at Nina Footwear, where he worked as a designer during the 1990s. “Zalo was larger than life,” said Nina’s creative director, Flori Silverstein. “He brought a sense of whimsy to everything he did. He was all about fun and color, and even a plain pump wasn’t plain in Zalo’s hands. He always made us laugh and would regale us with stories of pre-Castro Cuba and his days at Bloomingdale’s.” Pedroso’s friends said family was his main joy in life. His daughter, Lalin García-Pedroso, followed in his footsteps to become a footwear designer, while his son, Gonzalo L. García-Pedroso, is chief information officer at South Kent School in South Kent, Conn.    Full Obituary
