2.  Joel P. Schwartz Obituary, Born in Peoria, Illinois – Death

Joel was born in Peoria, Illinois, and spent his whole childhood there. He attended the University of Illinois and earned degrees in both Home Economics and Marketing. After completing his education, Joel moved back to Peoria to join his father, Ben, in the family business, Ben Schwartz Food Market. There, he continued his education in the grocery industry and learned everything from the bottom up. At age 27, after his father’s death, he lead the business and established a well-known and respected chain of seven grocery stores and two liquor stores. The shops earned the reputation of being “the store with everything in finer foods,” and they were noted for constantly showcasing the most cutting-edge concepts in the retail sector of the grocery industry.

In addition to this, he is credited with introducing the Chicago-style hotdog to Peoria by operating a restaurant called the Sausage Factory. Joel believed the customer comes first and is always right. Customers knew that no matter what they were looking for, they could find it at Benny’s, and if they couldn’t, Joel would go out of his way to locate it for them and deliver it to their house. He was known to open a store in the middle of the night if someone needed milk for their infant or open a store on Christmas day if a neighbor forgot an ingredient for a holiday dinner even though it was the one day that stores were closed.
