2. John Sargent Death – Obituary

My friend John Sargent, who passed away recently at the age of 101, worked as an ambulance driver for the majority of his working life. However, he and his wife Vera also owned and operated a grocery store in Coventry for more than 20 years, in which they sold organic produce that they had grown themselves on their own plot of land. John was born in the Berkshire region close to Hungerford to William, who managed the family mill, and Alice, who was William’s wife (nee Brooks). After moving to Coventry at the age of 14, he began working in the Rootes automobile factory as an apprentice toolmaker while studying engineering, drawing, and mathematics at Coventry Technical College. His grandpa had taught him how to produce food while he was still attending the local council school.

John first became acquainted with Vera Ross, a nurse, throughout the course of the war. They tied the knot in 1953 and shortly after opened a grocery store on Humber Avenue in Coventry, which they both managed together. Two years into the endeavor, they made their home on a smallholding in the vicinity of Corley Moor. The soil had been degraded as a result of the war, but it was quickly brought back into production by the addition of tons of pig dung. They planted fruit and vegetables on the smallholding so that they could provide their business with them. The shop was demolished in 1973 as part of a larger redevelopment project. The following year, John took a job as a first aid officer in the medical center of a nearby coal mine located in Keresley. He remained in that position until the mine was shut down in 1983.
