Willie Greene Death, Obituary – Cause of Death – Former Daingean goalkeeper Willie Greene has died. Willie Greene has died, and the cause of death is unknown.
On Thursday, June 9, 2022, Willie Greene, a former Daingean goalkeeper, died abruptly. Through an online statement, Daingean Gaa has confirmed his demise. At the time of publishing, the circumstances surrounding his death had not been made public.
“We learned of the demise of Willie Greene yesterday morning with tremendous sadness,” Daingean Gaa said. “Willie was a great gentleman on Main Street, and he will be sorely missed in the community.” Willie will be remembered as a member of the legendary Daingean footballers of the 1960s who dominated Offaly football. Willie was a vital player of the Daingean senior championship winning teams in 1962 and 1965, and is widely regarded as the best goaltender to ever wear the No. 1 jersey.
“His passion to Daingean GAA was extraordinary, and he frequently returned from England to man the goals at a period when travel back and forth took days.” Willie was unable to travel home for the 1967 final owing to foot and mouth disease, which played a significant role in their one-goal loss.
“After his playing days were finished, Willie became a mentor and coach for many Daingean clubs. While Willie’s death is a tragic loss, it does allow us to reflect on his amazing footballing exploits, as well as those of the 1960s team, which will be remembered for a long time. Willie will reunite with many of his former teammates, and I’m sure there will be plenty of football talk.
“Willie was a painter by trade and was well-known in the community for his work, which included assisting many locals and companies. Willie was also a devout Catholic who attended Mass with his wife Annie on a daily basis. Willie will be remembered as a nice and genuine individual who constantly smiled.
“At this time, we extend our heartfelt sympathies to Annie and the Greene family. Willie’s son Stephen is our PRO, player, and Nursery Coordinator, and the Greene family is still highly associated with Daingean GAA. Willie’s remarkable goalkeeping ability will be remembered fondly, and his image, along with that of the golden team of the 1960s, is proudly exhibited in our clubhouse to encourage the next generation of Daingean footballers.”
Maany is going to miss him a lot.
