2. John Fowles Death novelist – Obituary

Novelist John Fowles, who added sexuality and popular appeal to the serious literary novel, passed away from heart failure close to his house in Lyme Regis, Dorset. Fowles was known for bringing these elements to the novel. After spending the previous two weeks in the hospital in Axminster, his wife, Sarah, has stated that he “faded away, slipped away on Saturday.” She continued, “His heart just gave up – gave up, truly,” and I believe she meant it literally. Fowles, who passed away at the age of 79, will be most remembered for the love novel The French Lieutenant’s Woman. This work is a bold, detailed, and erotic version of the Victorian novel, and it gives the story a postmodern twist by offering multiple possible conclusions.

His publisher, Dan Franklin of Jonathan Cape, characterized it as “unbelievably experimental,” and he agreed. “When it came out, the two endings were completely ground-breaking in their innovative nature.” The French Lieutenant’s Woman was adapted for the big screen by Harold Pinter, and the movie was directed by Karel Reisz and starred Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons. The author expressed their thoughts on it by saying, “It appears wonderful but it is somewhat empty in the heart.”  His first love was France, but because of the Greek setting of The Magus, people used to see him as an expert on the Greek islands, which used to drive him mad.
