Sunday afternoon’s incident along Interstate 77 in Chester County claimed the lives of four people, including three men from the city of Columbia. Treshawn Simmons, age 29, Daniel Ewing III, age 29, and Thomas Grant III, age 20, were identified as the Columbia residents who were among the deceased by the Chester County Coroner’s Officer. At approximately 3:10 in the morning on September 11, the three were traveling in a Honda Civic that was engaged in an accident with a Chevrolet truck that occurred close to the county line between Chester and York.

According to South Carolina Highway Patrol Master Trooper Gary Miller, the Chevrolet allegedly crossed over into the southbound lanes and collided head-on with the Honda. The driver of the Chevrolet, together with two passengers in his Honda, and the Honda’s driver were all killed in the collision. A passenger in the Honda managed to escape unharmed. According to Richburg Fire-Rescue, which reacted to the collision, the southbound lanes that were close to the accident were closed for seven hours.

According to the reporting organization, a truck driver also stopped to assist, and even before fire crews came, he used his personal extinguisher to try to put out a fire that had started at the accident scene. In an update posted to their Facebook page later on Sunday, Richburg Fire-Rescue thanked the community for their “great compassion” and acknowledged that their efforts to help were not ignored.
