In addition to cracking wise and keeping tabs, he was also responsible for maintaining order. Thomas Carney, who served strong drinks, hard-boiled humor, and rough justice for three decades as the bartender in chief of Elaine’s, passed away on August 30 at his home in Palm City, Florida. It was one of the most renowned restaurants in the city, and the British-born Mr. Carney, who was known as Tommy to the majority of his customers, was responsible for shaping the restaurant’s business and personality behind the scenes from 1978 until 2007 when he retired. The New York Times described him as “a barkeep in the old school, a mixologist who has preserved alive these heedless days the saloon traditions of humor, tact, patience, and a boundless tolerance for drunks” in a report on his final night on the job. He was the second child of Jack and Betty, who lived in North Richland Hills, Texas; Keith and Charlotte, who lived in Medford, Oregon; Dan and Elaine, who lived in Omaha, Nebraska; Mark and Jo Ann, who lived in Farmington, New Mexico; and Kathleen and Roger, who lived in Emmetsburg, Iowa.
