At the age of 17, he enlisted in the Navy and served throughout the Korean War. One of his duty stations was at Tongue Point in Astoria. On the weekends, he would travel to Portland with his fellow sailors, and this is how he wound up meeting the woman who would become his wife of 56 years, Shirley Robertson Cole.
Holy Cross Catholic Church in North Portland was the location of their wedding on May 15, 1954, and it was there that they raised their four children. Don was a proud longshoreman who had a strong devotion to his family and spent his retirement years at his property on the coast range, which he called “Cole’s Camp.” Penny Lytle, Michael Cole, and Paul Cole are Don’s sons, and he is also survived by his daughter, Penny Lytle; granddaughters Alissa Clendenin, Brookelynn Sommer, and Chase Cole; and a great-grandson named Miles Sommer.
