Sidney Poitier, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 94, was the first African American actor to win an Oscar for his performance in the main role. He won the award in 1964 for his work in the film Lilies of the Field. This straightforward tale about a handyman who lends his assistance to German nuns in the construction of a chapel in Arizona was elevated by the wit and vitality of its leading guy. It resulted in a string of triumphs, including To Sir, With Love, In the Heat of the Night, and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (all in 1967), which made Poitier a box-office star and solidified his growing renown and wealth. These successes led to Poitier becoming a multimillionaire.

This was Poitier’s and Belafonte’s greatest joint achievement. It was despite challenges that seemed insurmountable that he was successful. He was born in Miami, Florida, two months before his due date, and into tremendous poverty. His Bahamian parents, Evelyn (née Outten), and Reginald Poitier had traveled there to sell their tomato harvest at the time of his birth. Before departing for Cat Island, where Sidney had spent the majority of his early life, Sidney’s family lingered in the United States for a further three months. Source
