According to an email sent out to the Dartmouth community by interim Dean of the College Scott Brown, a senior named Sam Gawel ’23, who was originally from Detroit, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly on campus today. The circumstances surrounding Gawel’s passing have not been disclosed at this time. According to his Facebook profile, Gawel received his high school diploma from The Jean and Samuel Frankel Jewish Academy in Metropolitan Detroit.

According to an email sent by Brown, he attended Dartmouth University and majored in anthropology, in addition to studying environmental and earth sciences. During his time there, he also participated in Habitat for Humanity and was a member of the Chi Gamma Epsilon fraternity. After a brief battle with sickness, Richard A. Gawel, age 76, from Franconia, New Hampshire, passed away on Wednesday, May 5 at his home. Richard Gawel, sometimes known as Dickie, was born in Germany on November 24, 1944, to parents Ludwik and Zofia Gawel. He spent his childhood on the Fobes farm in Franconia, where he developed a deep fondness for both the outdoors and for animals. He was also a sports lover his entire childhood and followed the Cleveland Indians with unwavering devotion.

He is survived by his wife Laura, whom he had been married to for 38 years, his son Randy, his daughter Jessica, his granddaughters Sophia and Sam, his brother Fabian, his sisters Maria (Fisher), Halina Gawel, and Elizabeth (Gwynn), as well as a large number of nieces and nephews. His mother and father, as well as his sister Teresa (Glover) and brother Marian, passed away before he did. A private memorial service honoring his life will be held later.
