2. Ann J. Knechtle Death of New Canaan – Obituary

Ann was the fourth child to be born to F. Cliffe and Grace Palmer Johnston, and she was born on March 5, 1923 in Brooklyn, New York. She started her education at Packer Academy in Brooklyn, after which she attended Miss Hall’s School in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. After that, she went to Sarah Lawrence College for one year when she was 16 years old, then Wheaton College in Illinois for two years, and finally earned her BSN from Columbia University in New York. She was employed by Dr. Frank B. Berry, a thoracic surgeon at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and the originator of the Berry Plan, which was intended to provide money for medical student education following World War II.

She wed Emilio B. Knechtle at the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York in 1950, and the couple eventually settled in New Canaan, Connecticut, on Smith Ridge Road, after spending three years in the Dominican Republic. There, they turned an old barn into a home and reared their six children. Ann was a member of the New Canaan Garden Club and participated in its annual flower exhibit. She also was a member of the New Canaan Country Club, where she played tennis and golf, and she taught lessons at the First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan, of which Emilio was one of the founding elders. In later years, they were members of the Black Rock Congregational Church in Fairfield, when Ann was teaching Bible lessons in New Canaan. Source
