2. Creed Taylor Obituary – Death

Creed Taylor, an American jazz record producer who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 93, was able to strike a balance between artistic quality and commercial success that was universally admired. The saxophonist Stan Getz, the guitarists Wes Montgomery and George Benson, whose jazz sensibilities he used to songs by the Beatles, and Esther Phillips, whose disco-tilted version of What a Difference a Day Makes was one of Taylor’s last hits were among his award-winning artists.

After Taylor’s early 1960s discovery of Brazilian music and the subsequent introduction of Getz to the sound of bossa nova, the two musicians collaborated to create the hugely successful albums Jazz Samba (1962) and Getz/Gilberto (1964), from which came the singles “Desafinado” and “The Girl from Ipanema.” Taylor’s discovery of Brazilian music and Getz’s introduction to the sound of bossa nova both occurred in the early 1960s. But there was a lot more to Taylor’s success than just having albums that sold millions of copies and winning Grammy awards.
