During the first day of a scheduled two weeks, as they were recording a song called “I Never Loved a Man (the Way I Love You),” it was evident that the environment of Hall’s studio was providing Franklin with the freedom to express herself without being constrained in any way. Towards the end of the session, however, the singer’s then-husband, Ted White, got into a drunken disagreement with a trumpeter, and when Hall went to Franklin’s hotel later to try to smooth things over, he and White got into a fight with one other. Franklin took a flight back to New York the following day and did not return to Muscle Shoals after that.

But the profound soulfulness of what they had recorded in Alabama sparked a sensation when I Never Loved a Man was released a few weeks later. It gave Aretha a No. 1 hit that set the course for a successful career and propelled her to new heights. Hall was raised in Franklin County, Alabama after having spent his childhood years in Forest Grove, Mississippi. Dolly, his mother, had already left the house by the time he turned five, and she found work in a brothel. Rick’s first practical participation in music came at the age of six when he was given a mandolin by an uncle. Rick’s father, Herman, who worked in a sawmill and later as a sharecropper, was a fan of gospel music.   Read more
