When he was in his twenties, he started performing in burlesque and eventually became the “top banana” at Minsky’s. Ragland was well-known (or infamous) among the other burlesque performers for his outrageous ad-libs, his unpredictable intrusions into the acts of other comics, and his robust libido off the stage. In the year 1940, he made his debut on Broadway in the musical “Panama Hattie,” which was performed by Ethel Merman. Shortly after that, he became a contract player at MGM, where he gained popularity as Red Skelton’s sidekick in the Whistling movies, such as “Whistling in the Dark,” “Whistling in Dixie,” and “Whistling in Brooklyn.” He also became a member of the cast of “Whistling in Brooklyn” in the same year.
