1. Peter Eckersley Obituary – Death
I’m devastated to report that Peter Eckersley […], one of the original founders of Let’s Encrypt, died earlier this evening [2022-09-02] at CPMC Davies Hospital in San Francisco. Peter was the leader of EFF’s contributions to Let’s Encrypt and ACME over the course of several years during which these technologies turned from a wild idea into an important part of Internet infrastructure. Peter had apparently revealed recently that he had been diagnosed with cancer – he turned just 43 shortly before midsummer’s day this year (or perhaps, given that he was originally from Melbourne in Australia, we should say midwinter’s day). 2. Patrick Eckersley Obituary, born on Forestry Island in Temagami, Ontario – Death
Pat’s childhood was spent on a market garden farm after the family uprooted their life and moved to Petersburg, Ontario, when he was still a child. After graduating from Kitchener’s high school, he continued his education at Waterloo Lutheran University, which is now known as Wilfrid Laurier University, as well as Western University. Later on, he jokedly stated that the most enjoyable aspect of his time spent in school was not the academic component, but rather the athletic part. At the university level, he was a phenomenal athlete who excelled in all three sports (football, basketball, and track). At the same time, he participated in the Ontario Rugby Football Union (ORFU) as an intermediate football player for the Kitchener club.
In high school, he became friends with the woman who would become the love of his life, Virginia Ann Heppler. Following their marriage in 1953, the couple settled in the Hamilton region with the intention of starting a family there. Pat started what would become a lifelong career in the steel and metals industry at Robertson-Irwin, and then later at Russel Steel. He retired from his position as President of Drummond-McCall with the Russel Metals company with a sense of accomplishment. Pat had a deep appreciation for nature, and he often went fishing and hunting with the same group of friends throughout his life. Read more
