Even his family and close friends had a hard time understanding Mitch Hedberg, a native of St. Paul who ran away from home and, despite living a scattershot life, became a runaway success as a standup comedian. Hedberg’s story is one of the most famous in the history of the standup comedy industry. Hedberg, whose space-case persona was just as much a part of his soul as it was part of his act, passed away early on Wednesday morning in a hotel room in the state of New Jersey. He was 37. Although the findings of the autopsy have not been released, the family of Hedberg has been informed that he suffered a heart attack. He was accompanied by his wife.

After graduating from Harding High School in St. Paul, Hedberg began his comedy career at Acme Comedy Co. in Minneapolis, where he worked his way up the ranks before getting his big break on a Comedy Central special.
