Martinez Obituary (1921 – 2010): Juan Martinez, known by his nickname Leopoldo, passed away on September 13, 2010, at the age of 89, at the Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City. He was the son of Juan P. Martinez and Antonia (Duran) Martinez and was born on July 12, 1921, in the town of Offerle. During World War II, Leo was a member of the United States Army and saw service in the European Theater of Operations. He wed Aurora Ramon on June 4, 1944, in Abilene, Texas, according to their wedding certificate. She passed away two years before he did, on July 2, 1996. In 1945, they made the move to Dodge City. Leo spent the better part of the last three decades in the workforce at Santa Fe Freight Line. After that, he worked for the Dodge City Parks and Recreation Department for ten years before moving on to the Dodge City Downtown Association for two years before calling it quits and retiring. Leo had many hobbies and interests, including fishing, dancing, and watching his children and grandchildren compete in sports. Full Obituary

He was the son of Leo Martinez and Minnie Martinez, who both predeceased him. He was born in San Antonio, Texas. After 25 years of devoted service, Leo decided to take early retirement from the Michigan Department of Transportation. The wedding took place on February 23, 2008, between Leo and Janet K. Pitcher. When Leo was younger, some of his favorite activities included hunting, baseball, and football. He was a devoted follower of the Dallas Cowboys. Leo’s other favorite activity was going dancing with Janet, and he took great pride in always looking his best. He was a man of strong faith who had spent his entire life adhering to the teachings of the Catholic religion. On December 23, 1932, he was born to Ruben Martinez and Beatrice Martinez in the town of Penasco, New Mexico. At the age of 18, he made the move to Utah to begin working for Kennecott. In Bingham Canyon, he got to know Gloria Gallegos, who would later become his wife. His wife Gloria, his son Leo (and his wife Lisa), his daughter Rebecca, and his sister Ernestina (and her husband Fermin) Duran are the ones who carry on after him. He also has a large number of nieces and nephews in addition to his eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
