1. Larry Zerone Obituary, ukulele orchestra – Death

Hi everyone, I’m afraid I have some sad news: Earlier this week, beloved Philadelphia Ukulele Orchestra member Larry Zerone passed away. He was at home and surrounded by family. He was 92. Mr. Z, as he was known by his band mates, started playing ukulele in the 50s, inspired by folks like Arthur Godfrey. He never lost his passion for the instrument throughout the years, so you can only imagine how surprised and delighted he was when we approached him about forming a ukulele orchestra. He was on board from the very beginning and quickly came to be considered the heart of the Uke Orchestra by his bandmates.
Mr. Z was an outstanding musician with an encyclopedic knowledge of long-overlooked Tin Pan Alley songs, many of which he intuitively knew would be perfect for us. He was always willing to share some musical tips, techniques, and arrangement ideas. Although he was in his 80s when we started the group, he patiently indulged our off-kilter ideas and never seemed put off by the shenanigans and occasional chaos that came with being part of a 12-person group (To be fair, he did call me a “whippersnapper” one time, but I suspect I probably deserved it). One of my favorite moments in every set was as an audience member of sorts, watching Mr. Z and his son Tim play Rose of San Antone.  Source

2. Lawrence D. Zerone Obituary, of New Jersey – Death

At the age of 92, Lawrence Zerone (also known as Larry) ascended into heaven on September 10, 2022. Lawrence and Jennie Zerone welcomed Larry into the world on August 17, 1930, in Haddonfield, New Jersey. His early schooling was provided by the Haddonfield school system. Larry received his high school diploma from Haddonfield High School as the class valedictorian in 1947, and in 1951, he graduated from Villanova with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. While a member of the Villanova Marching Band, he enjoyed playing trumpet. He began working as a chemical engineer at Foote Mineral Company in Kings Mountain, North Carolina, right after finishing college.

Larry was enlisted in the American Army in 1954 while still working at Foote Mineral. He served in the army for two years. His task required him to remain domestically and involves studying the consequences of radioactive warfare. Larry married Eileen (née McFarland) in 1955 while he was still serving in the military, and they started a great new life together. They were blessed with five lovely children in just eight years. Before retiring in 1996, Larry had a successful 45-year career in chemical sales and marketing with Dow Chemical, McGraw Hill, and Chilton Publishing Company. After retiring, he discovered a new career and spent the next 23 years working at his son’s music store, The Music Place, in West Berlin, New Jersey. Read more
