John Madden Obituary, Syracuse, NY: After spending many years as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders, John Madden went on to have a successful career as a color commentator for the National Football League. On December 28th, 2021, John passed away. He had been 85 years old when he sadly passed away. Due to a knee injury, he sustained while in training camp with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1958, Madden’s playing career was cut short, and he was never able to realize his dream of playing football professionally. However, he quickly changed careers and started coaching, first at Allan Hancock College and then at San Diego State. In 1967, Madden made the transition to the National Football League (NFL), where he was hired by the Raiders as their linebackers coach. Madden was just 32 years old when he was named head coach of the team less than two years later, making him the youngest head coach in all of professional football at the time. During his tenure as head coach of the Raiders, which spanned ten years, John Madden never led the team to a losing season and guided them to eight postseason appearances, including a triumph in Super Bowl XI. As the youngest coach in history to win 100 games in the regular season, he is held in high regard for accomplishing this feat in just 10 seasons. He was the son of Peter Madden and Helen (Diggins) Madden and was born on February 22, 1927, in Amherst, Massachusetts. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy for many years before retiring with a disability. His wife Lois A. (Gerbert), who had passed away in 1993, predeceased him. His five children, Michael Madden of Seabrook, Texas, Laura Squires of Wilbraham, Sharon Burkett of Chicopee, Christina Valdes, and Cynthia Parent both of Boynton Beach, Florida, and Sharon Burkett of Chicopee, are the only ones to survive him.
