2. John Brophy LaFontaine Death, of Norwich – Obituary
John Brophy LaFontaine, who was 86 years old when he died on Sunday, December 12, 2021, passed away without incident. John LaFontaine was the eldest of four children and was born on June 22, 1935 in Norwich, Connecticut to Walter and Helen LaFontaine, who have now passed away. John’s fondness for his grandfather, Dr. Edward Brophy, an immigrant from Ireland, and his grandmother, Hilda Anderson Brophy, an immigrant from Sweden, provided a foundation for which he frequently and proudly spoke. Dr. Edward Brophy was born in Ireland, and Hilda Anderson Brophy was born in Sweden. Both John’s father, a banker, and his mother, a primary school teacher and school administrator, instilled in John a strong work ethic and expectations of excellence.
Henry LaFontaine was his uncle, and it was he who instilled in him a love of culture, piano, and classical music. John was a Norwich Free Academy alum and he was very proud of his accomplishment. Little League baseball, tennis, and running his paper route were John’s favorite activities when he was a kid. He attended Holy Cross College, where he majored in Chemistry and History, and served as captain of the tennis teams at both his high school and college. In New York City, where they both had apartments on the Upper West Side, he met his future wife, Frances Hosley, who was from Greensboro, North Carolina. They got married on August 22, 1959, and have been together for 58 cherished years. Read more
