Her parents, John J. and Kathleen H. (Higgins) Deady, welcomed her into the world on August 18, 1953, in Chicago. On July 2, 1994, she joined her life with Gerald M. “Jerry” Smith in marriage.
JoAnn spent her childhood in Streamwood, Illinois, and received her high school diploma from Larkin High School in Elgin. She was employed at a number of establishments, some of which include the Northwest Herald in Crystal Lake and Baird & Warner Real Estate in St. Charles. She also worked for a considerable amount of time as a Mary Kay Consultant.

She was awarded the United States JCI senate number 51107 and served as State President of the Illinois JCI Senate. She was a member of the Illinois Jaycees and served as a chapter, region, and state officer during her time with the organization. A member of the Knights of Columbus Council 776 Ladies Auxiliary and the current president of that organization. At the St. Mary Catholic Church in Woodstock, where JoAnn was a member and active volunteer, she held the roles of Mass coordinator, Extra-ordinary Minister, and Lector. Full obituary
