Jimmy Neary, an Irish immigrant who boarded a ship to the United States in the 1950s and went on to open a namesake pub and restaurant in Manhattan that has been a canteen for New York City power brokers for more than half a century, passed away on October 1st at his home in Manhattan. The restaurant and pub had been a mainstay in the city for more than half a century. He was 91. His daughter, Una Neary, stated that her father had passed away.

Neary managed the legendary restaurant known as Neary’s, which first opened its doors on Saint Patrick’s Day in 1967. Hearty dishes, such as lamb chops with mint jelly, are served there, and customers dine while seated on red leather banquettes in a room with red tablecloths. T-shirts and shorts are not allowed due to the establishment’s strict dress code, and the walls are covered with photographs of notable patrons such as Ted Kennedy, Michael Bloomberg, Rudy Giuliani, and Kathie Lee Gifford.  Read More

Jimmy Neary, 91, Iconic New York City Irish Restauranteur Jimmy Neary was born and raised in New York City (“Jimmy”) On September 14, 1930, Neary was born in Tubbercurry, which is located in the county of Sligo, Ireland. His family was poor. After arriving in the United States at the age of 24, he quickly established a name for himself in New York City by opening the renowned restaurant “Neary’s” on East 57th Street. Jimmy began his working life in 1954 by taking a job as a porter at the New York Athletic Club (NYAC). He went on to become the first former employee to join the club as a member and was later recognized as the “Irishman of the Year” in March 2013.

In the years leading up to the launch of Neary’s, he was also employed as a bartender at P.J. Moriarty’s. Since its opening on St. Patrick’s Day in 1967, Neary’s restaurant has been a popular destination for well-known people from all walks of life, including high-ranking politicians, religious leaders, television personalities, famous authors, sports icons, and a cross-section of New York City’s most elite residents. Jimmy was known as “57th Street’s best-dressed man” by the locals of Sutton Place, who frequently referred to him in that manner.
