1.  James “Dub” Medlin Obituary, of Kingsport– Death

Mr. Medlin was a devout follower of the Methodist religion, and he enjoyed farming, trading animals, and being a Mason. Mr. Medlin spent the better part of three decades honing his carpentry skills at Eastman Chemical. James was a fantastic member of the family in all of his roles: husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He had a deep and abiding love for his family. Mr. Medlin is survived by his wife, Joann Harrison Medlin, who lives in Gray; his daughter and son-in-law, Christy and Mark Gambrell, who also live in Gray; and his three sons and daughters-in-law, Carl and Debbie Barnes, who live in Fort Smith, Arkansas; and Chris and Amy Medlin, who live in Gray.

Mill, South Carolina, Mike and Judy Barnes of Kingsport, and Scott and Kathy Barnes of Jonesborough; seven grandchildren; Whitney Gambrell, who stayed with her grandfather throughout the entirety of his illness; Heather Barnes, Beverly Boss, Rachel Barnes, Cecilia Barnes, and Shamblyn L. Barnes; three sisters and brothers-in-law; Barbara & Rufus Tipton, Portia & Rendall Burgess, and Sandra Medlin, all of Gray; two brothers and sisters- In addition, Mr. Medlin is survived by a number of nieces and nephews, as well as a close friend named Paul McClure. 2. Ann Compton Medlin Obituary, born in Fairforest, South Carolina  Death

She received her high school diploma from Fairforest in the year 1953. She attended Winthrop College on a full scholarship, and after four years there, she earned a bachelor’s degree in social work from the institution. In 1957, Ann wed a man named Fred Wilson Medlin, who was from Chester, South Carolina. In 1963, the couple made the move to Salisbury, North Carolina, where they created a home, a place of business, and raised their four children. Towne Pharmacy was their place of employment (now Moose Pharmacy).

Ann has spent the entirety of her working career battling for the rights of people who are intellectually and developmentally handicapped in Rowan County and throughout the state of North Carolina. Between the years 1972 and 1985, she was the Director of what was then known as the Rowan County Association for Retarded Citizens and is now known as The Arc of North Carolina Triad Region. Between the years 1985 and 1997, she held the position of Administrator at RHA Health Services. Read more
