2.Kalervo Kavi Ruuskanen Death, of waterbury – Obituary
On Wednesday, December 16, 2020, Kalervo (Kavi) J. Ruuskanen passed away at Woodlake at Tolland Rehabilitation and Nursing Center as a result of problems brought on by Covid-19. It was on June 23, 1941, in Waterbury, Connecticut, that he was born to the late Otto and Helmi (Kasanen) Ruuskanen. Although he spent the majority of his youth in Canterbury, Connecticut, where his parents had purchased a farm in 1943, he was born in Waterbury. Kavi attended Griswold High School and the University of Connecticut, where he earned a degree in Agriculture. He then managed the family farm for several years, during which time he sold eggs both on the market and directly to customers from his home. Kavi spent the latter part of his life working for a security company.
Kavi was one among the first people to join the Canterbury Volunteer Fire Department after it was formed by its charter members. He continued to serve the department for more than 60 years as a firefighter, an emergency medical technician, and a member of the fire police. When he was honored in 2011 for his 50 years of service, his family came together to celebrate the occasion, and he was very happy to display the Fireman’s Statue in both his home and his room in the long-term care facility he had moved into in Woodlake. In addition to that, Kavi was a member of the Finnish American Heritage Society. Kavi became an Auxiliary Trooper for the Connecticut State Police in 1965. Read more
