2. Horace Clarke Death – Obituary

Horace Clarke, a dependable but light-hitting second baseman for the Yankees who became inextricably and dishonorably associated with the team’s lean years in the 1960s and ’70s — what some sardonically labeled “the Horace Clarke era” — passed away on Wednesday at his home in Laurel, Maryland. Clarke played for the Yankees during the 1960s and ’70s. He was 82. The news of his passing was conveyed to the public through the office of his cousin, Stacey E. Plaskett, who serves as a Democratic delegate in the United States Congress and represents the Virgin Islands. The reason of death, according to his son Jeffrey, was complications from Alzheimer’s disease.

Clarke, a middle infielder who was undersized for his position, made his major league debut in 1965. At the time, he was one of only five players born in the United States Virgin Islands to ever make it to the major leagues. He was a member of the Yankees for all but a portion of the final season of his professional baseball career, which he played for 10 years. What he lacked in power as a hitter — he only had 27 career home runs — he more than made up for with a sure hand with the glove and terrific speed on the basepaths. His total number of stolen bases reached double digits in seven different seasons, and on four separate occasions, he ranked among the top 10 base stealers in the American League. Source
