1. Hermann Gummel Obituary, born in Hannover, Germany – Death
Hermann Gummel, who was adored by many, passed away on September 5 at the age of 99, surrounded by those who were closest to him. Hermann Gummel was the middle brother of Hans and Charlotte Gummel’s three children: older sister B’rbel, younger brother Achi, and Hermann, who was born on July 6, 1923, in Hannover, Germany. Hermann joined the German armed forces during World War II and served as a radio operator for the German army after he graduated from high school. During the Normandy Landing (also known as “D-Day”), he was hurt and taken prisoner, and he was eventually transferred to a hospital in Scotland.
Because of the sympathetic treatment provided by the doctors and employees there, Hermann was able to avoid having his leg amputated, and he was thankful for this throughout his entire life. The direction that Hermann’s life would take was going to be determined by his intellectual capacity as well as his interest in academics. After the war, he went back to school as a wounded veteran at the University of Marburg. It was there that he met the woman who would later become his wife, Erika Reich, and fell in love with her. Before she passed away in 2016, they had been married for a total of 64 years. Hermann’s pursuit of academic success led him not just to love but also to new territory. Read More
