Guy Whidden, member of the 101st Airborne Division and D-Day veteran passed away on the 19th of September. Rest In Peace Sir, we will never forget what you did 78 years ago. Guy Whidden was born on June 18, 1923 in Wyncote, Pennsylvania, to Rendol and Myrtle Whidden. Guy Whidden was a paratrooper in HQ Company, 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division during World War 2. He was a machine gunner and jumped into Normandy in the early hours of June 6, 1944. Guy Whidden also jumped into Holland during operation Market Garden in September, 1944. He was severely wounded near Best during a mortar attack when three of his best friends were killed by the same mortar. Guy was still recovering in a hospital when the Battle of the Bulge happened. After his recovery, he was sent back to Fort Benning and became a jump school instructor. Guy Whidden is awarded with the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantry badge, a Netherlands Orange Lanyard, and the Good Conduct Medal.Read More

On June 11, 2022, Mrs. Joyce M. Whidden of Lake Butler, age 82, passed away quietly in the Suwannee Valley Care Center in Lake City. Joyce McCoy, who was born on January 3, 1940, in Ft. Myers, Florida, to the late Jim and Mabel Bostic McCoy, lived in south Florida for the majority of her life. She and her family relocated to Union County in 1998 in order to enjoy the tranquility of the countryside. Quilting was Mrs. Whidden’s area of expertise as a skillful seamstress. For her quilts, she has received various accolades and trophies. She has also long been a devoted member of the Starke First Baptist Church. Her parents passed away before Mrs. Whidden.

In addition to her husband of more than 45 years, Mr. Wilson Whidden of Lake Butler, Mrs. Whidden is also survived by her daughters, Carrie (Jay) Blodgett of Howie-in-the-Hills and Kim (Jamie) Austin of Lake Butler; stepchildren, Steve Hatcher and Pat (Doug) Bliss, both of Naples; her four grandchildren, Avah and Tyler Blodgett and Cole and Bailee Austin; and her On June 22, 2022, at 11:00 a.m., Mrs. Whidden’s life will be commemorated at her church, First Baptist Church of Starke. To preside will be Pastor Matthew Page. On Tuesday, June 28, 2022, at 10:00 am, there will also be a celebration at New Hope Ministries in Naples, Florida.
