She passed away in peace with her family by her side. On January 14, 1924, she was given the name Helena Geraldine Burch at birth. She graduated from Roxbury High School in Roxbury, Kansas, and then went on to complete her cosmetology training at Stewart Beauty Academy in Salina, Kansas. In 1946, she tied the knot with George Bender, who was born and raised in Wakeeney, Kansas. Before he passed away in 1997, they had been married for a total of 50 years and had four children.

Because of her husband’s career, the couple moved all over Kansas and even spent some time in Illinois before settling down in Nampa. Gerry went to work for the Idaho Free Press as a rural paper carrier not long after the family had finally found a place to call home and had settled in. Her clients were able to time their day around the delivery of her papers. If the paper was delivered 10 minutes after the scheduled time, they would realize that something was wrong. Before taking her retirement in 1997, she had worked for the newspaper for more than 37 years. Full Obituary
