1. Fr Leo Staples Obituary, of Wygram Place, Wexford – Death
The St. Patrick’s Missionary Society in Kiltegan has paid tribute to Fr. Laurence ‘Leo’ Staples, who passed away unexpectedly on Monday, August 22 in the St. Patrick’s Care Unit. Francis Staples and Margaret Mary (née O’Dwyer), both of Wygram Place, Wexford, were Leo’s parents. They welcomed their son into the world on April 19, 1925. Although his given name was Laurence, he was given the nickname Leo at a very young age. Before continuing his education at St. Peter’s College in Wexford, Leo attended the local national school for his primary education.
After receiving his Leaving Certificate in June of 1945, he submitted an application to St. Patrick’s Missionary Society, but the medical doctor who examined him declined to accept him as a candidate for membership. As a result of the fact that his mother had passed away at a relatively young age, he was informed that his health would not permit him to live in Africa. He enrolled in the philosophy program at St. Peter’s College and graduated with his degree in June 1947, having studied philosophy for a total of two years. Read More
