Eddie Butler, a well-known commentator and former captain of the Wales rugby team, passed away on Thursday at the age of 65, according to an announcement made by BBC Scrum V. According to the broadcasting organization, Butler passed away while sleeping while participating in a charity hike in Peru. During his career, he played for Wales 16 times between 1980 and 1984, serving as captain six times and scoring two tries. But it was after he retired that Butler catapulted to stardom, becoming one of the faces of the BBC’s rugby coverage and receiving a call-up to the British and Irish Lions tour of New Zealand in 1983.

The former No. 8 also gained a call-up to the tour of New Zealand by the British and Irish Lions. Before leading a notable Five and Six Nations collaboration with fellow Wales player Jonathan Davies and former England hooker and Telegraph Sport columnist Brian Moore, the Welshman’s legendary broadcasting career began with him working alongside the great Bill McLaren.
