1. Dorothy Howard Mather Death, Of Stafford – Obituary

Dorothy Waring Howard, who was 95 years old when she passed away on August 25 at the Grant Park Care Center in Washington, was the person who established the Garden of Children nursery school in Washington in 1929 and directed it until she retired in 1961 and closed it. Dorothy Waring Howard had founded the school. She was a resident of Washington. The Garden of Children was the second nursery school to be chartered by the District of Columbia and the first to be founded specifically for black children. It was located in her home at 1728 S Street Northwest.

In the first class, there were fewer than a dozen students, and Mrs. Howard’s daughter was one of them. In a short amount of time, her “early-start” principles of education, competence, and warmth garnered a big following that was devoted to her. Her student body includes the offspring of prominent individuals, such as diplomats, university presidents, and at least one Nobel Prize winner. In the end, there were approximately 44 students enrolled at the school on an annual basis, together with four teachers and a housekeeper. Read more

Following a brief bout with illness, Dorothy A. Ermy, age 86, of 1190 County Route 66 in Hornell, New York, passed away on Tuesday, July 26 at the intensive care unit of Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York. She was the daughter of Frank and Edna (Norton) Secondo and was born in Hornell on the 31st of December in the year 1935. Dorothy’s childhood was spent in Hornell, and she received her high school diploma from Hornell High (class of 1954). She worked as a waitress at what was formerly the Cards Drug Store when she was in high school, and she was employed at what was formerly the Merrill Hosiery in Hornell for a total of 17 years.

Dorothy worked as a baker at Hornell High School for a total of 25 years, during which time she provided the student body with a variety of delectable sweets, including her world-famous peanut butter cookies, which are cherished by those who graduated from the school. In 2002, she took her retirement. Dorothy was a devout Christian who attended both Our Lady of the Valley Parish and St. Ann’s Church. She was also a member of the parish of Our Lady of the Valley. She was very dedicated to the St. Ann’s Adoration Chapel and had a strong affection for the St. Ann’s Church community.
