Wanda Coleman learned that due to her dark skin and “unconkable kinky hair,” growing up in Los Angeles in the 1950s often felt like torture. Years later, she reflected, “My appearances dictated the stifling cerebral loneliness of my youth in the 1950s and 1960s. Boys oohed and aahed at me as girls giggled behind my back. Black instructors shook their heads in sympathy while White teachers watched in delight or amazement. However, she claimed that it was difficult for her to find books, which were her prized shelter, because libraries “discouraged Negro readers.”

She is survived by her devoted husband of 76 years, Roy Senate Wilson, as well as her four daughters and sons-in-law: Marsha and Danny Smith, Yvonne and Mitch Jenkins, Linda and Lonnie Roberts, and Jan and Richard Odom.
