PD: 15-year-old shot, killed in Muskegon; teen arrested
MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities say a teenager was arrested in connection to the shooting death of a 15-year-old in Muskegon Tuesday.
The Muskegon Police Department said the shooting happened around 8 p.m. at a home on Catawba Avenue near the intersection of Wood Street.
The victim died at the scene, according to an MPD news release.
The 17-year-old suspect is in custody. He faces charges related to the deadly shooting, the release said. It’s unknown what led to the shooting.
The police department did not release any additional information about the shooting, which remains under investigation.
“When is it going to end? Sometimes I think our community is getting numb to it because it’s happening so frequent,” said Michelle Tyson, who runs Taking Back Muskegon, an anti-gun violence organization in the Muskegon area. “Everybody is trying to figure out ways to keep the youth busy this summer.”
Tyson says it was disappointing to see yet another young person die at the hands of gun violence in her community.
“Guns are too easy to get. Everyone is asking the question: Where are they getting guns from? Guns are so easy to get and the only way we (are) going to stop it is to stop making the guns,” said Tyson.
Tyson says she’s already started speaking to area police departments about increasing patrols but stopping the violence must start at home.
“Go in your kids rooms, see what’s going on. see what’s in there. If you have a gun at home, make sure it’s locked up, make sure it’s registered,” said Tyson. “Until we reach the home, inside the home, it’s going to be hard to reach the youth that really, really need those programs to come and participate.”
