East Hartford shooting during home invasion leaves two dead

EAST HARTFORD — Two men were shot dead overnight during an apparent home invasion, police said Thursday.

Police believe the two men were breaking into a duplex on Graham Road about midnight when a homeowner shot them, Lt. John DuPont said. They were looking for one or more armed people who may have involved and possibly left the scene.

“We are looking for a person who may be armed,” DuPont said shortly before 6:30 a.m. Thursday. Deputy Chief Joshua Litwin later said police are not sure if anyone else was involved, but they haven’t ruled it out.

“Detectives have not eliminated the possibility that another (person or persons) may have been involved,” Litwin said.

Police said the resident remained at the scene and is cooperating with police.

Litwin said detectives “are currently investigating this incident as a possible targeted home invasion, there does not appear to be any danger to the public.”

According to Litwin, police responded to Graham Road, near Brewer and Main streets, early Thursday after getting reports of shots being fired. They found two men wounded by gunfire. Paramedics provided medical aid and they were rushed to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

On Thursday morning, Deliaynez Cabel said the father of one of her children lives at the Graham Road home where the shooting occurred. Cabel said she heard two people were shot there, but she has not been able to contact her child’s father.

She said the two were in a relationship for about four years and he works for a basement improvement company.

“I’m shocked,” Cabel said of the shooting.

Police ask that anyone with information about the shooting call Detective Dan Ortiz at 860-291-7669, or call the East Hartford Police Anonymous Tip Line at 860-289-9134.
