He was a colorful schismatic who won the election in 1990 in Belvue, Kansas, thanks to the votes of six of his followers. In 2009, he stated that he had approximately thirty “strong followers.” Bawden was selected by a group of six laypeople, which included himself and his parents. Bawden was one of the candidates considered by this group. 1975 was the year when Bawden and his family began their journey to become members of the Society of St. Pius X. (SSPX). Willie moved to Hartford in the early 1960s, and ever since then, he has been an enthusiastic participant in both juvenile and adult sports. Willie has been a lifelong supporter of local athletics in the community. It didn’t matter whether he was participating in, coaching, umpiring, or refereeing a game for North End organizations and sports leagues, a young basketball team, a youth baseball team, or a men’s flag football game; his passion for children and athletics kept him coming back year after year.
