On January 20, 1993, one of the most admired actresses in American history, Audrey Hepburn, passed away close to where she lived in Lausanne, Switzerland. In November of the previous year, the 63-year-old Hepburn had surgery to remove colon cancer from her body. Hepburn received her fifth nomination for an Academy Award in 1967 for her portrayal in the film Wait Until Dark, in which she plays a blind woman whose home is broken into. Soon after that, she retired from acting on a full-time basis and settled primarily in Switzerland. During this time, she made occasional cameo appearances in films that were both well received and poorly received, such as Robin and Marian (1976), which starred Sean Connery, and Bloodline (1979) and They All Laughed (1981).

Hepburn first tied the knot with actor Mel Ferrer in 1954, and the couple went on to have two kids together before divorcing in 1968. The following year, Hepburn wed Andrea Dotti, an Italian psychiatrist, and the three of them went on to have a son together. Later, they got a divorce, and in 1980, she started a relationship with Robert Wolders, who was an actor in the Netherlands.
