On July 2, 1951, Anne Longworth Garrels made her debut into the world in Springfield, Massachusetts. She spent a portion of her youth in London, where her father worked as an executive for Monsanto. She has fond memories of her time there. She was educated at St Catherine’s School, Bramley. After resettling in the United States, Garrels initially attended Middlebury College before transferring to Radcliffe College, which is part of Harvard University. There, she majored in Russian studies and received her degree in 1972.

She started working at ABC in 1975 and held many roles there over the course of the next ten years, including that of Moscow bureau head and correspondent, until she was ousted in 1982. During the years 1984 and 1985, when she was the head of the Central American bureau, she covered the wars in Nicaragua and El Salvador. Garrels served as the correspondent for NBC News at the United States Department of State. In 1988, she became a reporter for National Public Radio, where she covered conflicts in Chechnya, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Israel, and the West Bank, among other places.
