Aaron Hogue, a businessman from Henderson, was recognised as the pilot who perished when his plane crashed on Sunday in Reno during the National Championship Air Races. Hogue was killed in the crash. Hogue, 61 years old, was participating in the Jet Gold Race piloting a red L-29 jet that he named Ballista when the aircraft he was flying crashed in full front of onlookers and exploded into flames close to the Reno-Stead Airport. In a press conference held on Monday, Fred Telling, Chairman and CEO of the Reno Air Association, stated that “Aaron’s tragedy affects everyone.”

“While there is nothing that can be done to rectify this terrible situation, I would encourage everyone to think of Aaron, pray for him, and honour the enthusiasm that he had for his life and especially for air racing.” The accident was recorded on camera, multiple tweets showed the falling plane from a variety of vantage points, and it was displayed on the official broadcast of the event. He graduated from St. Stephens High School in 1956, at which time he enlisted in the United States Army, and then he married his mother the following year, in 1957. He was born at home on April 6, 1937, on County Home Rd. in Conover, to the late Charlie Francis Aaron and Junie Edna Kaylor Aaron.

His early career was spent as a member of the 82nd Airborne, and his service took him (and sometimes us) to many areas around the United States and internationally. Additionally, on occasion, his government “politely” requested that he spend significant amounts of time away from his family. He was a Vietnam veteran who served his nation for twenty and a half years and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service, both of which are accomplishments of which we are extremely proud. After serving in the United States Army for many years, he eventually retired and went on to pursue a variety of jobs, including stints at Carolina Kenworth and Abernethy Laurels.   Read more
